BaBar 26 Feb 2003

Tim, Richard, Steve, Doug, Booker, Andy, Adil, Dominique, Gilbert?

We would include a discussion of the following items:

a) What technologies and applications has PPDG provided for your Experiment or Collaboration to date?
SRB, security AAA, grid access to SLAC (AFS)
bdb server
Alistair does client installation kit

b) How has PPDG made an identifiable contribution to your Experiment goals to date, if any, and what potential do you see for contributions in the future?
no direct impact to physics analysis yet,
PPDG is influencing grid development significantly, job submit, results retrieve, site-AAA proposals necessary for secure access

c) Where would you like to see PPDG concentrate its efforts during the next year and a half?
interoperability at different sites, BaBar + LHC, necessary for standards,
happy to see VDT in LCG-1
interoperability means different versions of s/ware & different s/ware
code stability & quality – needs to work in production
need some stability & not too fast cycle time on new releases & whole new installations
concern on support time for GT2, dropped end of year
needs collaborative arrangement with developers and user groups
need the discussion with Globus & Condor teams

d) Do you see PPDG effort as appropriately coordinated and allocated?
yes,
appears the process in PPDG does work to

e) Are you interested in continuing to collaborate as part of PPDG as we consider the next phase of the project following the review in April?
yes

e) Have the discipline and computer scientists better understood the computing requirements and the potential for grid technology and deployments?
MOU BaBar-Karsruhe – needs grid job submission
have good interactions with SRB & Globus people

f) Do you have any concerns or issues with the support of the technologies you are deploying as a result of the PPDG efforts?
see c), concern with interoperability and split between US and EDG developments
need interoperability between versions or can not possibly make large production grid
need support for GT2
SRB team has been responsive & good feedback, s/ware is more mature & fewer problems
if things work no one cares what the code is but when it does not work hooks for troubleshooting are important
we need good connection with developers (50-50 w/ EDG), some fixes have been accepted back into code base & some have not
how to converge on solution with EDG development, LCG development deployment on several sites, VDT in future
important to have these meetings & keep improved good communication
